workspace – EmEditor (Text Editor) https://www.emeditor.com Best Text Editor, Code Editor, CSV Editor, Large File Viewer for Windows (Free versions available) Mon, 09 Dec 2019 22:29:00 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 What is a “solution”? Why both workspaces and projects? https://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/what-is-a-solution-why-both-workspaces-and-projects/ Mon, 09 Dec 2019 22:29:00 +0000 https://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/what-is-a-solution-why-both-workspaces-and-projects/ What is a “solution”? How and why do workspaces and projects differ?

(I want “projects” to mean sets of files and other (parent) projects, along with a file that contains lines that expand to folder views (folder and file trees), comments, and system commands (to show files in browsers, compile and build projects, etc.). Multiple projects can be opened at the same time, in different groups of tabs. <flame>No editor seems to offer this, and I don’t have the time to create my own editor. So frustrating.</flame>)

Workspaces don't save window-splitting status https://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/workspaces-dont-save-window-splitting-status/ Fri, 13 Oct 2017 16:33:34 +0000 https://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/workspaces-dont-save-window-splitting-status/ Let’s say I have three files open, and I split one of them in half . When I save and restore the workspace, that split is gone.

Cursor positions, bookmarks, etc., should be saved per workspace. https://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/cursor-positions-bookmarks-etc-should-be-saved-per-workspace/ Wed, 20 Sep 2017 19:54:38 +0000 https://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/cursor-positions-bookmarks-etc-should-be-saved-per-workspace/ I work on a large web-based system with hundreds of files, some of them large. There are many issues assigned to me, so I create a workspace per issue so I open only files relevant to that issue, and I see in each one’s window the code I need to work on.

However some files, especially big ones, are relevant to more than one issue; for example, of the file ABC.html the top might be relevant to issue X, but the bottom relevant to Y. If I work on Y, I work at the bottom, but if I switch to X, I’d like to work at the top. The problem is that when I work on Y, the editor has saved the cursor positions and bookmarks, not the workspace. So when I start to work on X, I switch to ABC.html and see what’s relevant to Y, not X.

So I think bookmarks and cursor positions should be stored at the workspace level.

The status bar should show the current workspace name, or "(default)" https://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/the-status-bar-should-show-the-current-workspace-name-or/ Tue, 12 Sep 2017 21:01:56 +0000 https://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/the-status-bar-should-show-the-current-workspace-name-or/ I work on a complicated web site, whose structure has thousands of files, and I organize my work by user story or task in an Agile environment. To do that I create a workspace for each story or task, and I open all the files and only the files that are relevant. (I also have it remember cursor locations, because some files are very large, so they’re relevant for many stories/tasks.) It would be nice to display the workspace name in the status bar so I could keep track of what workspace I’m saving when I save the current workspace.

A multiple group workspace restore glitch in version 14.4.1 https://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/a-multiple-group-workspace-restore-glitch-in-version-14-4-1/ Sat, 26 Apr 2014 02:07:45 +0000 http://www.emeditor.com/forums/topic/a-multiple-group-workspace-restore-glitch-in-version-14-4-1/ Hi there,
After updating to the latest version of Emeditor (14.4.1) I can no longer save my workspace as I was able to do in version 14.3.1 (Windows 8.1 32-bit).
If my workspace consists of only one tabbed group of files — everything is OK. However, if there are three separate group windows in my workspace, the result is quirky. Upon restoring the saved workspace, I get two empty files named “tempWS0.txt” and “tempWS1.txt”, the third file being one of the saved three files (not empty).
Should I downgrade to the previous version (4.3.1) or wait for a fix?

BTW, I can’t find out where the workspace information is stored in EmEditor?
Thank you.
